I am pleased to announce that I have been elected to the Board of Directors for Celebrate Frederick, a 503[c] non-profit involved in large scale programming for Frederick City. It was presented in the Information Technology Strategies in Health Care session of the 2011 HCI International Conference (HCII). Once the conference is complete, the paper will appear in the proceedings by Springer-Verlag. I was interviewed as part of a cover story on Web Cam Beginnings by Fox News Baltimore. The story aired several times on June 8th, 2011 and is availble for online viewing at the WBFF web page. Evaluations from my Spring classes are in: undergraduate MIS, Analytical Methods, and graduate MIS. I'm delivering a presentation entitled, "Communication, Coordination, and Collective Action: Examining Strategies of Collaborative Problem Solving in Alternate Reality Games" to the New Social Media and Crisis Workshop at the Universität Bielefeld, Germany. Sadly though, I am only attending this workshop virtually. It's official - I've just been promoted to Assistant Professor of Management at Hood College. This is a tenure track appointment in the Department of Economics and Management My paper, "Alternative Approaches to Representing Knowledge in the Human Environment" with co-authors Lee Boot and Stacy Arnold was accepted for presentation at the International Symposium on Electronic Art (ISEA 2011) in Istanbul, Turkey. I am excited to report that I will be attending the Maryland Institute for Technology in the Humanities (MITH) workshop on developing APIs (Application Programming Interfaces) for the digital humanities. Evaluations from my Fall classes are in: MIS, Analytical Methods, and Principles of Management. I have been named a partner to the Institute for National Security Education and Research (INSER) at the University of Washington. In July, I'll be presenting my paper, "Supporting a Shared Dialog on Healthcare Policy between Researchers, Practitioners, and the Lay Public: Creating the SpeakHealth Online Community" in the Information Technology Strategies in Health Care session of the 2011 HCI International Conference (HCII). The conference is in Orlando, FL. I've been informed that my iConference paper, "Designing the Future of Collaborative Workplace Systems: Lessons Learned from a Comparison with Alternate Reality Games" was accepted. Listen to me present the paper in February at the 2011 iConference in Seattle or catch the paper in the ACM digital library after the fact. I'll be attending the ACM Group conference in Sanibel Island, FL. this November to present my poster paper, "Alternate Reality Games and Groupwork."

I'll also be attending the CSCL@work workshop to talk about "Transforming CSCL in the Workplace by Supporting Online Personal Networks." My interactive visualization/game, "Perception and the Art of Decision Making" created with Lee Boot, Eric Smallwood, and Shane Lynch (and funded by the National Academy of Sciences) will be installed on the National Mall, Washington, D.C. Oct. 24-26 for the Inaugural USA Science and Engineering Festival Evaluations from my Spring classes are now online - undergrad MIS, MBA MIS, and undergrad Analytical Methods. I'll be speaking to high school students interested in an Information Technology careers at this year's IT CareerPathways event, hosted by Carroll Community College. Promoted! I've been upgraded from Instructor to Visiting Assistant Professor of Management for the 2010-2011 school year. The Hood College graduate school just informed me that I was nominated by my past students for the Graduate School Teaching Excellence Award for the 2009-2010 academic year I was accepted into the Summer Research Institute of the Consortium for the Science of Socio-technical Systems (CSST 2010). I'll be attending this NSF sponsored event in June. Reviews are now online for this past Fall's classes: MIS for undergrads, MIS for MBAs, and Ethics for MBAs. I received word that a chapter I coauthored with Alyson Young (UWO) and Anabel Quan-Haase (UWO) will be published in the Handbook of Research on Methods and Techniques for Studying Virtual Communities: Paradigms and Phenomena. The chapter is entitled: "Online multi-contextual analysis: (Re)connecting social network site users with their profiles" I successfully defended my dissertation, "Designing Deeply Engaging Online Communities for Adolescents." Abstract available here. My submission, "Supporting Reflective Thinking by Adolescents on Educational Issues in a Media-Rich Online Community" was accepted to the 2010 Biennial meeting of the Society for Research on Adolescence (SRA). This is my first publication with a student of mine (Maggie Patterson, Hood '10). This work will be presented as a poster in March in Philadelphia. I just found out that my panel session "Get off my e-Lawn! Mulching Youth and Technology" has been accepted to the upcoming ACM Conference on Supporting Collaborative Work in Savannah, GA. Other panelists include Cliff Lampe (MSU), Sartia Yardi (GaTech), Fred Stutzman (UNC), and Amy Bruckman (GaTech). I'm pleased to report that my paper "Wiki Anxiety: Impediments to implementing wikis for IT support groups" has been accepted to the 2009 CHIMIT conference in Baltimore, MD. It will be nice to attend a conference without the hassle of travel. Reviews from this past Spring's classes (Analytical Methods for undergrads, MIS for undergrads and MBAs) are now online. I was honored to receive the Vinton G. Cerf Award for the best Student Authored paper at the DESRIST 2009 Conference. The paper, "Towards a Design Theory for Online Communities" is available in the ACM digital library. Plan to attend, "Engaging Multidisciplinarity in Sociotechnical Internet Research: a hands-on workshop" at this year's Internet Research conference (AoIR 10). I'll be running this workshop with the help of my co-authors Ingbert Floyd, Miriam Sweeney, Caroline Haythornthwaite, Andre Brock, Steve Sawyer, and Sean Goggins. As well as presenting my full paper, I'll be attending the Approaching 'Amateur' workshop at the ACM Group conference this May. My paper, "Towards a Design Theory for Online Communities" has been accepted to the ACM conference on Design Science Research in Information Systems and Technology (DESRIST). The conference is scheduled for this May at the Penn State Great Valley Campus. The news just arrived that my full paper to the ACM Group conference has been accepted! I'll be travelling this May to Sanibel Island, FL to present, "A View from Mount Olympus: The Impact of Activity Tracking Tools on the Character and Practice of Moderation." I'm heading back to San Diego - this time to present my paper, "Developers and Moderators: Lessons Learned in the Co-development of an Online Social Space" at HCII. The conference runs from the 19-24 of July. The mail came bringing news on my third year review. The letter announced that I have been reappointed, "...based on your dossier and upon the recommendations of your departmental colleagues, the members of the Faculty Personnel Committee, and the Dean." In other news, my reviews from this past Fall's classes (Analytical Methods for undergrads, MIS for undergrads and MBAs) are now online. I just received word that my submission to the 2009 Society for Research in Child Development's Biennial Meeting has been accepted. This poster, entitled, "Engaging Adolescents in Discussions About Their Education Through an Internet-Based Multimedia Community" will be presented this upcoming April in Denver. I am pleased to report that my paper, "The Fieldtrip Project: Teens' Cellcam Films Balanced Authenticity and Expertise to Spark Online Peer Discussions to Increase Engagement in Education" has been accepted to the international conference on Ubiquitous Learning. This conference will be held at the University of Illinois, Chicago on Nov. 17-19th. The Fieldtrip blog has launched! Fieldtrip is a multi-disciplinary effort devoted to, "Using Internet-based Multimedia to Engage Teens on Education Issues", of which I am a key team member. Come learn more about the fieldsite of my dissertation work. On Nov. 6th at 6PM, I'll be giving a presentation at the annual forum of the Greater Frederick Advertising Federation (GFAF) entitled, "The science of advertising in online social networks." The theme of the forum is, "E-marketing: Emerging Media." The call for papers for the 4th International conference on Design Science Research in Information Systems and Technology (DESRIST) is now online. I am on the committee for this conference, serving as the webmaster. Be sure to make plans to attend this upcoming May in Philadelphia, PA. Its going to be a busy Fall! I have received word that my paper, "Network Authentication using Single Sign-On: The Challenge of Aligning Mental Models" has been accepted to the Conmputer-Human Interaction for the Management of Information Technology (CHIMIT 2008) conference in San Diego this November 14th and 15th. I just received notice that I have been nominated for the graduate school teaching excellence award at Hood College. Apparently, I was nominated for this annual award by several MBA students in the department. Keep your fingers crossed! I have been invited to present my paper, "Examining moderator use of activity-tracking in a nascent online community for adolescents" in the "Virtual Communities, Virtual Worlds" track of the INFORMS 2008 conference. INFORMS is slated for early October in Washington, D.C. I'm Copenhagen bound! My paper, "Rethinking Recruitment for Adolescent Online Communities" has been accepted to the ninth annual conference of Internet Research (Internet Research 9.0: Rethinking Community, Rethinking Place). I'll be attending the conference this October 15-18th. My paper "Designing Deeply Engaging Online Communities for Adolescents" has been accepted to the doctoral consortium of the Third International Conference on Design Science Research in Information Systems and Technology (DESRIST 2008). I'll be attending the consortium and conference this May 7-9th. My dissertation committee has been formed!
